Dunhill: Ring Grain (3111) (2020) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-015-5444
While we more often see the "11" Lovat design from Dunhill in larger sizes, this delightful rendition comes to us in versatile Group 3 dimensions. The upright bowl houses generous chamber capacity, its rim finished smooth in opposition to the shell briar sandblast that dresses the rest of the stummel. The lengthy shank terminates in a trim saddle stem of black vulcanite, its hues meshing well with the inky stain of the briar, the Ring Grain designation attesting to the lovely wealth of growth rings that undulate throughout the stummel.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.- Joel Balyeat
