Dunhill: Chestnut (1421) (2019) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-015-5525

Dunhill's "21" Zulu shape is one of my favorites from the English marque, keeping true to the classic profile, as is the standard for Dunhill, with its gently flaring bowl and fluid forward cant. There's just something imminently captivating about the languid flow of its lines, especially when, as in this case, it's paired to a curved stem, extending the ebb of the silhouette. There is also a kind of consistent expansion to the shape, reminding me of the Horn profile, and fostering a kind of building momentum that reaches its greatest potential energy at the fore of the rim. Dressed in the dark, timeless hues of the Chestnut finish, this piece is paired to a matching cumberland stem and showcases a handsome array of grain across the stummel.

A sibling to the Cumberland, Dunhill's Chestnut finish was inaugurated in 1983 to commemorate the closing of the Cumberland Rd. warehouse for which the Cumberland finish was named. Like the Cumberland, pipes in the Chestnut line wear the same dark, smoky stain and are fitted to stems of cumberland but feature a silky smooth, glossy finish compared to the Cumberland's rugged sandblast.
