Dunhill: Shell Briar (6107) (2018)

Product Number: 002-015-5589

In all of our archives, this whopping-big straight Apple, the Dunhill "07" shape in a Group 6, appears but rarely. Granted, Group 6 briars are rather hard to get a hold of in general — but even so, it's not like a straight Apple is some exotic rarity of the English school, like say the Cavalier or Dragoon. Regardless, what we have here is a full-bodied, thick-walled, solidly-sitting Dunhill briar, with handsome grain commended by the Shell Briar finish.

The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
