Dunhill: Ring Grain Quaint Dublin (5) (2019) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-015-5599
Dunhill's Quaint pipes deviate from the English marque's standardized shape chart, offering unique designs that are both playful and creative, like this Dublin. In hearty Group 5 proportions, this piece features a tall, muscular bowl that houses a good bit of chamber capacity. The taper from the broad, flared rim to the heel is more pronounced than in the marque's typical renditions of the shape, so the waistline of the bowl is dramatically cinched. Out back, the shank and stem provide a keen sense of balance with the bowl in profile. The stummel wears the dark Shell Briar sandblast, which coaxes out handsome waves of growth rings across the surface of the bowl.
Having earned the English marque's prestigious Ring Grain designation, this Dunhill piece wears a particularly choice iteration of the Shell Briar sandblast — displaying stunning waves of ring grain across the stummel. The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.--Davin Hylton
