Dunhill: Cumberland with Silver (4117) (2020) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-015-5793

This compact "17" straight Bulldog from Dunhill belongs to a limited-edition line of pipes boasting brindled stems of non-traditional colors. Rendered in Group 4 size, the low-lying, muscular bowl features a rather high-set, subtle ridgeline and a quick taper to the firm heel. The high-set transition and crisp lines of the diamond shank further accentuate the design's stoutness, while a gleaming sterling silver band adds a tasteful bit of flash. Topped by a brindled, vulcanite stem of atypical tan and beige colors, it handsomely complements the earthy hues of the Cumberland sandblast.

When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe-smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."
