Dunhill: Bruyere (5406) (2015) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-015-5831
With its robust bowl and thickly chambered walls, this bent Pot from Dunhill is exquisitely balanced in hand and beautifully crafted. This Billiard variant's dark, smoky stain comes courtesy of the English marque's original Bruyere finish, unveiling swirling fields of birdseye on either flank of the bowl. The gently tapered stem moves off the shank face and downturns slightly, accentuating the upright and sturdy disposition of the Pot's bowl. Said stem is more often seen on the White Spot's "07" Prince shape, so it's quite nice seeing it paired to the robust build of this Pot, as it lends a touch of elegant poise which balances out the muscular shaping present here.
The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill's original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless.--Davin Hylton
