Dunhill: Shell Briar Quaint Bent Billiard (3) (2021) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-015-5877
Dunhill's Quaint series is a line of pipes that deviate from the English marque's standard shape chart. This particular bent Billiard shape is more conservative than some other pieces in the series, with just a touch of extra length afforded to the gently lifted shank and arcing tapered stem. Up front, an Egg-like bowl sits atop a firm heel, its contours working well with the stem to offer a subtle curvature to the design, the latter's jet-black color complementing the dark Shell Briar sandblast that dresses the stummel for a shadowy profile.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.--Davin Hylton
