Dunhill: Shell Briar (3112) (2020) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-015-5981
A Group 3 sized "12" Billiard, this Dunhill pipe features the depth of a Stack design. Indeed, the English marque's "12" can apply to either shape. It boasts plenty of chamber and is a sturdy Sitter, thanks to a flattened underside. The statuesque bowl is poised pertly at the end of a seamless, straight-as-an-arrow stretch of shank and stem, the low transition accentuating the bowl's height nicely. Perhaps the most eye-catching aspect, though, is the bowl's unique pattern. it's been carved in a unique "beehive" pattern, reminiscent of the English marque's vintage "UT" design.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
