Dunhill: Chestnut with Bamboo (5112) (2021) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-015-6154
Bamboo-adorned pipes began during a time when briar was scarce: WWII and the years immediately after. Not only did bamboo save on briar, it played off of preexisting fashions — the term "whangee" had already long been in use for bamboo canes (like those used by Charlie Chaplin in his role as the Tramp) and umbrellas, and even cigarette holders made by Dunhill themselves. The idea not only stuck around long after it had been put to use for the sake of practicality, it positively thrived. Dunhill's bamboo-adorned pipes became affectionately know as "Whangees," promoting a slightly organic aesthetic that departs from the more austere English style the marque is famous for.
This "12" Stack from The White Spot is presented in impressive Group 5 size, providing plenty of chamber depth, while the abbreviated shank is extended by two knuckles of bamboo for a more naturalistic take on the form. The pale shank is contrasted by both the abbreviated cumberland stem and the warm, smoky tones of the smooth Chestnut finish.
A sibling to the Cumberland, Dunhill's Chestnut finish was inaugurated in 1983 to commemorate the closing of the Cumberland Rd. warehouse for which the Cumberland finish was named. Like the Cumberland, pipes in the Chestnut line wear the same dark, smoky stain and are fitted to stems of cumberland but feature a silky smooth, glossy finish compared to the Cumberland's rugged sandblast.-Gabriel Bass
