Dunhill: Shell Briar Calabash (5) (2021) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-015-6213
The Calabash isn't a shape typically associated with Dunhill, making this piece one of the English marque's rarer offerings. With a highly distinguished S-curve, the entire piece gradually flares from bit to rim, terminating in a sleek Dublin bowl, forgoing the traditional, mushroom-cap design. The only interruption to the smooth-lined profile is the briar accent ring at the shank, finished in a smooth, walnut stain to contrast the stummel's dark, Shell Briar sandblast. For an even more refined look, the shank end here features a generous band of sterling silver.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
