Dunhill: Root Briar Canadian (DR*) (2020) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-015-6228
Dunhill's expertise in traditional pipe shapes is well-known, and this Canadian is an excellent example of the English marque's timeless style. A pert, Billiard-like bowl rests on a soft heel at the fore of an extended oval shank fitted with a comfortably abbreviated vulcanite stem, creating a thoroughly English silhouette. This piece is further ennobled by the coveted Dead Root designation, reserved for only the absolutely finest of grain. To better highlight the natural beauty of the briar, the stummel wears a glossy natural finish, drawing the eye the excellent straight and flame grain around the bowl, as well as the swirling birdseye along the shank.
Dunhill's "DR" designation on certain Root Briars signifies a special class of pipes: Dead Root. Like all Root Briars, these pieces maintain flawless briar, but with especially choice grain on display. Before the Root Briar line's introduction in 1931, "DR" was stamped on Bruyere pipes that showed handsome grain, but Dunhill wanted a more grain-defining finish, leading to the creation of the Root Briar. Starting in 1979, The White Spot extended the grade further — replacing the letter grading system with stars, increasing in prestige from one to seven. A Dead Root pipe represents the best of Dunhill's standard selection, yet remains quite rare compared to the English marque's overall lineup.-Gabriel Bass
