Dunhill: Cumberland (4104) (2018) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-015-6317
The core aspects of this piece from Dunhill are that of the English marque's "04" Bulldog shape. The classic lines of a tapered, ridgelined bowl and crisp, diamond shank feel right at home on the shape chart. There's no shortage of charm here, especially up front, thanks to the tall bowl's impressive stature and striking forward-canting stance. The tapered cumberland stem unifies pleasingly with the dark hues of the stummel's sandblasted Cumberland finish. An elegant piece, it offers plenty of stimulation in hand and classic appeal all the way around.
When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe-smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."-John McElheny
