Dunhill: Shell Briar (2108) (2022) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-015-6404

Dunhill's "08" shape designation can either denote bent Bulldog or Rhodesian — the latter found here on account of its rounded shank. This Group 4 rendition is forward-sweeping and low-set, the shape's beadlines replaced by a more reserved ridgeline just above the transition and close to the rim. The curvature of the heel is consistent and informs the bowl's fore and the shank's upward curve, making for a cohesive composition that aligns with the design's classic standards.

The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
