Dunhill: Root Briar Zulu with Silver (DR****) (2022) Tobacco Pipe

It is extraordinarily rare to see a Dunhill stamped with the marque's prestigious Dead Root appellation, and it is even more uncommon to see one stamped with four stars. Therefore, this four-star Dead Root Zulu marks the epitome of Dunhill's distinguished legacy. Here, the pert bowl flares from a sweeping heel to a broad rim, which is defined by its crisp edges and slight cant, imbuing the piece with a forward-urging momentum. That dynamic is furthered by the seamless transition between the bowl and the sweeping, ovoid shank, which manifests a cohesive flow across the stummel. Furthermore, the shank rises to a flashy silver band and a jet-black vulcanite stem, and the handsome contrast of the two elements fosters a striking and elegant character. Additionally, the stummel is dressed in the blonde hues of the Root Briar finish, highlighting a wealth of enticing grain for one to appreciate.

Dunhill's "DR" designation on certain Root Briars signifies a special class of pipes: Dead Root. Like all Root Briars, these pieces maintain flawless briar, but with especially choice grain on display. Before the Root Briar line's introduction in 1931, "DR" was stamped on Bruyere pipes that showed handsome grain, but Dunhill wanted a more grain-defining finish, leading to the creation of the Root Briar. Starting in 1979, The White Spot extended the grade further — replacing the letter grading system with stars, increasing in prestige from one to seven. A Dead Root pipe represents the best of Dunhill's standard selection, yet remains quite rare compared to the English marque's overall lineup.
