Dunhill: Shell Briar (4903) (2022) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-015-6900
It's immediately curious when the proportions of a Group 4 Dunhill give it the impression of boasting ODA size. That impression, though, is only the result of this "03" Billiard's extra-short shank and saddle stem combination. While measuring under four inches in length, this Nosewarmer features a chamber of standard depth and a bowl that's almost as tall as the shank and stem are long. Such dramatic proportions are a departure from Dunhill's typically highly traditional shaping, but that's to be expected when prioritizing pocket-friendly size and a lightweight form.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
