Dunhill: Cumberland (3303) (2023) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-015-6943
Endowed with a softly curving bowl and displaying a slight cant, this Group 3 Billiard by Dunhill presents a svelte, low-lying shank-and-stem arrangement out back, resulting in a pleasant visual contrast. A wide transition leaves plenty of room to drape a thumb, while the subtle contours of the solidly built bowl up front offer a comfortable feel in hand. A rather unique piece, this Billiard has been fitted with an extended tapered stem, as evidenced by the "3" in the second spot of its shape code, making for a profile that's all the more lithe and elegant. This piece is dressed in the crisp and warmly-stained sandblast of the Cumberland series, paired to a stem of its eponymous brindled vulcanite and showcasing handsome grain.
When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe-smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."
