Dunhill: Shell Briar (4201) (2017) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-015-7149
The "01" from Dunhill's venerated shape-chart is an archetypal straight Apple that exudes classic English charm. The bowl is supple and plump, the walls gently bowing outward as they rise to the trim rim. Out back, the proportional shank and stem are perfectly perpendicular to the bowl, creating the iconic, streamlined profile. Additionally, this particular "01" is rendered here in Group 4 size, features a sleek saddle stem fashioned from jet-black vulcanite, and is dressed in Dunhill's timeless Shell Briar finish.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
