Dunhill: Ring Grain Quaint Dublin (3) (2019) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-015-7157

As part of the Quaint series, this Dublin from Dunhill is a notable departure from the "05" shape on their standard pipe chart — the Quaint series being a line devoted to more non-standard designs compared to the English marque's typically classic shaping style. That said, this Group 3 piece remains considerably traditional, but not in the context of classic English shaping. Instead, it caters more toward Danish design cues, the shank elongated and subtly flared while the heel is softer, leading into a forward canted bowl topped with an inflated rim. An abbreviated saddle mouthpiece gives a nod to the Lumberman design, giving this Quaint rendition further uniqueness.

Having earned the English marque's prestigious Ring Grain designation, this Dunhill piece wears a particularly choice iteration of the Shell Briar sandblast — displaying stunning waves of ring grain across the stummel. The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
