Dunhill: Cumberland Stubby (3421) (2017) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-015-7340

Essentially a combination of the Horn and Dublin shapes, the traditional Zulu features a gentle transition that flares upward into a Dublin bowl, still dynamically forward-canted but more upright and defined of transition than the typical Horn rendition. While Dunhill does occasionally pair said stummel with a straight stem, this example caters to the classic Zulu form, with a slightly downturned, Prince-like stem. The bend coordinates with the bowl's forward cant and makes for quite the elegant design, with this piece presented in "Stubby," Nosewarmer dimensions and dressed in the fetching Cumberland finish.

When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe-smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."
