Dunhill: Cumberland (4127) (2023) Tobacco Pipe

Presented in Group 4 size, this "27" is Dunhill's Acorn or Pear shape, and while the English marque often fashions the design with a languid bend to the shank-and-stem arrangement, this particular rendition is as straight as an arrow. The tall, stocky bowl features a flared rim and a high-set waistline, which gives it a bulbous appearance in profile, made all the more noticeable by the sleek, minimalist oval shank and tapered vulcanite mouthpiece that stretch out of the wide transition. It's all dressed in the crisp sandblast and earthy stain of the Cumberland finish.

When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe-smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."
