Dunhill: Cumberland with Silver (5102) (2020) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-015-7363
Dunhill's "02" bent Billiard is widely considered the archetypal rendition of the form, and the English marque rarely departs from such standards. When rendered in Group 5 or 6 size, as is the case for this piece, the traditional form displays a more rounded base and more noticeable upward taper than it's smaller, shorter iterations. Such design cues lend the bowl more poise and also add sleekness to the S-curve in profile. Furthermore, this particular Cumberland example bears the addition of a sterling silver accent band for regal flash and eye-catching appeal.
When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."
