Dunhill: Shell Briar Quaint Rhodesian with SIlver (3) (2021) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-015-7466

Dunhill's Quaint series denotes pipes that fall outside of the English marque's shape chart, either as modified versions of existing shapes, or completely new ones. This Rhodesian showcases a far more slender silhouette than most other renditions of the shape from the White Spot, all thanks to its compressed, ovoid stretch of shank and stem. Said combination ebbs out of a wide transition, tapering subtly through the shank's subtle left and the stem's long, arcing travel: the junction marked by a trim band of silver. Up front, the bowl stands on a rather firm heel, its walls flaring out to a high-set waist marked with a firm ridgeline, one additionally denoting a swift taper to the flat rim. This piece is dressed in the crisp, darkly-stained sandblast of the brand's iconic Shell Briar sandblast, its silver junction band offering a wealth of contrast.

The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
