Dunhill: Shell Briar Quaint Paneled Poker with Silver (4) (2022) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-015-7499
Although Dunhill typically draws on their century-old shape chart for their pipe designs, their Quaint series focuses on pipes that break the mold. This Group 4 paneled Poker by Dunhill possesses a unique bowl, which is framed by three facets on its flanks and fore that meet at tidy chamfers. However, the aft of the bowl showcases traditional curvature, manifesting an intriguing geometry that elegantly combines rigid structure and supple contours. Furthermore, the stummel is paired to a demure tapered stem, its gentle downward bend inspiring some dynamism in profile. Moreover, the stummel is dressed in, perhaps, Dunhill's most famous finish, the Shell Briar.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
