Dunhill: Shell Briar (3108) (2023) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-015-7690
Dunhill's "08" shape code defines two different shapes depending on the rendition, both a bent Bulldog and a Rhodesian, with this particular piece being the former. A sturdy, muscular pipe, this iteration of the classic shape is a timeless one, staying true to Dunhill's archetypal Anglo-French shaping style. Presented in balanced Group 3 size, this rather light briar yet retains a muscular look and plenty of sturdy angularity, especially at the diamond-shaped shank-and-stem combination. Said pairing lifts out of a wide transition and curls into a comfortable arc that makes smoking easy and enjoyable, their dynamic posture lending the composition a charming character. The bowl here stands atop a firm heel and flares into a high-set waist marked with twin beadlines, this waist additionally marking an easy taper to the flat rim. Dressed in the inky tones of the Shell Briar finish, this pipe showcases handsome grain throughout.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
