Dunhill: Shell Briar (4104) (2020) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-015-7768
On the leaner, more classically oriented end of Dunhill's shaping spectrum (even in Group 4 size), the English marque's "04" straight Bulldog is crisp of line and tightly-knit, boasting a pronounced forward-cant in profile, lending it a strongly traditional disposition. The Shell Briar's dark sandblast does an excellent job here of lending the piece a fine texture, both visually and in hand, but without compromising the shape's clean lines.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
