Dunhill: Bruyere (3203) (2023) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-015-7827
For many people, the Billiard is the archetypal pipe shape, the one that instantly comes to mind when one thinks of a pipe and one that has withstood the test of time for well over a century. Dunhill's "03" is that traditional profile distilled to its purest form, with this "3203" example pairing the timeless shape to a rather lengthy saddle stem, making for an extremely sleek silhouette. This stem balances the visual weight of the bowl quite well thanks to its reach, and sits at the aft end of a fairly trim shank. The bowl here is pert and slightly plump, taking on a slight taper from the rounded heel to the smooth rim. It's all presented in the Bruyere line's glossy smooth finish.
The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill's original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless.
