Dunhill: Shell Briar (5133) (2017) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-015-7841
Often times, Dunhill's "33" design merges elements of the bent Brandy with those of the Volcano, the base often wide set and demarcated by a ridgeline that leads to a more flattened heel. In this hearty, Group-5 rendition, that flattened heel is consistent; however, the bowl presents a more upright, Billiard-like posture, supported by the upturned shank and elegantly bent stem. It's dressed here in the timeless and historic Shell Briar sandblast.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
