Tom Eltang: Smooth Sphinx with Horn
Product Number: 002-299-0546
Though still showcasing Tom's careful attention to clean lines and soft, supple curves, this Sphinx is definitely a jauntier number from the venerable Danish artisan. It's not exactly rakish, with the bowl's plump, convex faces adding plenty of softness to the design, but the sharp spur beneath the transition, as well as the well-defined ridges flowing down either flank, does emphasize the form's angular stance. It's all beautifully balanced in profile, however, with a touch of downward turn to the mouthpiece and a bit of cant to the bowl as well. What's more, Tom's framed the block's natural grain patterns beautifully here, using those aforementioned ridges to separate its dense crossgrain from the sea of whirling birdseye flooding the fore. Gorgeous piece.
