Tom Eltang: Smooth Elephant's Foot with Bamboo (Snail) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-299-0737

The Elephant's Foot is one of the most iconic designs from Tom Eltang, though its presence is scarce in our archives. It's a shape that requires a keen eye for grain, its triangular panels at the flanks carefully measured to frame the cross-grain found there, while the broad, softened fore and aft present seas of tight birdseye — with all of the above dressed in a warm, vivid contrast stain. All of this should be no surprise, given its prestigious "Snail" grade. While we've seen the shape paired with the traditional briar shank, as well as horn ferrules, here Tom has chosen three knuckles of pale bamboo as both shank extension and accent — a combination that serves to bring out the lighter hues in the contrast stain, as well as to present a touch of organic charm. From tip to tail, every fraction of this piece has been carefully considered, making for a piece that is stunning in every respect.
