Tom Eltang: Rusticated Arne Jacobsen with Horn Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-299-0815
Arne Jacobsen was a Danish architect and designer throughout the mid-1900s, most renowned for his contribution to the school of architectural Functionalism and his innovative furniture designs. Jacobsen was also often seen smoking a pipe, most usually a slender straight Dublin, not unlike the Eltang piece we see here. Boasting a tall bowl, deep chamber, featherweight stature, and superbly crafted button, this offering from Tom is a worthy homage to the Danish designer and does well to exemplify Arne's functional approach to design. Jacobsen has always been noted for his sense of proportion, a design characteristic that he considered of the utmost importance. In a similar fashion, Tom has proportioned this pipe beautifully, both in physical and visual weight, giving the bowl just enough prominence to make it stand out but without causing one to ignore the slender stem and fetching horn mount, or to make the piece too heavy toward the fore. It's all wrapped up in Eltang's signature rustication, making for a complete work of art that I'm sure Arne would have been proud to have smoked.
