Tom Eltang: Smooth Bent Egg (Snail)
Product Number: 002-299-0874
Presenting that familiar sense of forward-inclined gesture that's part and parcel to Tom Eltang's more artful designs, this bent Egg shape from the carver is a splendid display of implied motion, coupled with a touch of flourish and a bit of asymmetry to boot. The Danish carver has made excellent use of an incredibly subtle teardrop ridge, initiated at the shank's end, traveling the length of the briar in profile, serving to accentuate the form's sinuous shaping. The diagonally-oriented saddle stem's base serves to reinforce the aforementioned implied momentum, sporting as it does a bit of understated flare, seeming to complete the lines initiated by the shank itself. Finished in one of Tom's stellar contrasts, vibrant licks of tight flame and straight grain are found on all flanks, coupled with no shortage of birdseye either, all of which is fitting, given its Snail grade designation. An awesome piece.- Daniel Bumgardner
