Tom Eltang: Smooth Billiard with Horn
Product Number: 002-299-0904
I can't stop looking at this Tom Eltang piece in profile. From the height of the bowl, to its slight forward cant, to the relative length of the shank and that of the saddle stem, it's a stunning lesson in perfect proportions, and yet it measures in at just under five inches in length. Such a size is a bit more compact than other saddle-stemmed Billiard iterations we've seen from the Danish carver, but the bowl size here is on par with his other offerings, as Tom balances out the shorter overall length by adding a touch extra briar to the shank and transition. The bowl itself is just about two inches tall, keeping the in hand feel firm and substantial while also offering plenty of chamber. Chock full of Tom's signature minimalism and sleek design cues, the piece exudes the Danish school's soft lines and supple curves, with some cheeking at the transition and a subtle taper toward the rim. It wears a darker iteration of Tom's signature contrast stain, highlighting a well-positioned band of cross grain that bisects the birdseye-riddled flanks — it's deeper, ruby-tinged hue drawing the eye to the pale and creamy horn ferrule at the stem base.-Truett Smith
