Tom Eltang: Smooth Acorn with Horn (Snail)

Product Number: 002-299-0952

Tom Eltang fashions a number of Acorn designs, ranging from taller iterations with obvious, protruding heels to more squat, bulbous shapes that tow the line between Acorn and Tomato. This masterful piece here is of the latter variety and is actually the second take on the design I've come across. Tom must have a particular love for the rendition too, as both this pipe and the previous one each received a Snail grade, the Danish carver's most prestigious designation. To warrant such a high grade, the piece must both exemplify perfect shaping as well as exhibit unparalleled grain — this piece clearly meeting both of those criteria with ease. Shape-wise, it's a paradoxical balance between dynamic momentum and robustness, the elegant lines of the stem and shank curling and tapering into the slightly forward canted bowl while the rounded disposition of the high-set waistline creates a tucked transition and substantial feel in hand. As for the grain, such a shape takes quite well to perfect orientation: a band of straight grain wraps the entirety of the bowl, leaving the heel and rim studded in dizzying seas of birdseye. Yet another stunning pipe from Tom and subtly accented with a trim ferrule of horn along the stem base.
