Tom Eltang: Smooth Bent Apple (Snail)

Product Number: 002-299-0989

The Danish shaping cues, contrast stain, and expert stem work all indicate this bent Apple as a Tom Eltang-made pipe. However, compared to the other bent Apples we've seen from the Danish master, this particular rendition is a touch different. Most other iterations are especially bulbous of bowl, with an equally distributed plumpness through the bowl. Here, however, Tom's traded the curves of the bowl's aft line for more forward-urging angle. Such a design element accentuates the profile's dynamism and adds momentum to the composition's lines. The streamlined nature is supported by the shank's subtle taper toward the stem and more reserved S-curve — compared to the more deeply bent versions we're used to seeing from Eltang. These fast-moving aspects lend this piece a certain sleekness that belies the muscularity defining the bowl; the dynamic lines decrease the profile's visual weight, making for a surprisingly svelte form, despite its inherent substance. Further commending it is a compact, versatile length, and Tom's signature contrast stain that reveals perfectly oriented flame grain and birdseye — well-deserving of the Danish artisan's esteemed Snail grade, the first bent Apple we've received to have earned such a designation.
