Tom Eltang: Smooth Bent Brandy with Horn
Product Number: 002-299-0994
A beautiful, Danish-style Brandy, this piece from Tom Eltang personifies the artisan's personal aesthetic and overall approach to shaping. The entire profile is marked by a flowing sinuosity and inherent sense of forward momentum, the stem and shank curling into the lower bowl, poising it at a forward cant. Such dynamism is simple yet striking in its execution and is an oft-used motif within Eltang's work. Furthermore, the transition and angle of the shank and stem fall in line with other similarly bent pieces from Tom: The transition slightly stretched and well-defined to prompt cheeking at the lower bowl. It all conforms wonderfully to the palm, and as one of Tom's more deeply bent pipes, it hangs from the jaw with ease. All dressed in one of the Danish carver's signature, crimson-tinged contrast stains, the stummel is accented with a mount of horn at the shank end — a classic Danish touch, the slight flare at the end echoed by the disc-shaped base of the stem.-Truett Smith
