Tom Eltang: Smooth Bent Brandy with Silver
Product Number: 002-299-1001
The overall gesture of this bent Brandy from Tom Eltang corresponds to other renditions we've seen from the Danish artisan, namely in the elegant sinuosity of the shank and stem and the tapered bowl's forward-inclined posture. In this particular example, though, Tom has shaped the bowl slightly differently. Instead of displaying a rounded, voluptuous heel that seamlessly informs the bowl's low-set waistline, here Eltang has tightly cut off the heel, making for a more flat-bottomed aesthetic that separates the bowl's taper from the heel. Such a design cue adds more firmness to the heel, compared to the "lifted" style we're used to seeing in many Danish pipes, while also accentuating the bowl's forward cant, furthered by the cheeking highlighted thanks to the defined transition. It's a shape defined by a mix of rigid structure and elegant curvature, dressed here in a grain-defining contrast stain and topped with sterling silver for a clean, chic presentation.-Truett Smith
