Tom Eltang: Smooth Devil Anse

Product Number: 002-299-1004

If you've followed Tom Eltang's work for any significant amount of time, you're no doubt familiar with this Devil Anse shape and the design's origins. The compact, forward-canted nosewarmer was inspired by the 2012 mini-series Hatfields & McCoys — a similar design seen smoked by Kevin Costner's character William "Devil Anse" Hatfield. It's not often that a shape's beginnings come from pop culture, making the Devil Anse something of an outlier among other pipes. That said, though, it's since become a popular shape, being fashioned by a number of workshops and artisans alike. Tom Eltang's signature iteration remains one of the most prolific and widely recognized. It's offered here in a deep, ruby-tinged stain covering the Egg-like bowl and sleek, oval shank and stem combination.
