Tom Eltang: Smooth Bent Dublin
Product Number: 002-299-1043
Tom Eltang's clean, minimalist style is on elegant display in this bent Dublin rendition. The oval shank and slender saddle stem exhibit an ever-so-slight sinuosity, informing the profile's sleek dynamism and drawing focus forward to the bowl, and the oval shaping further emphasizes the bowl's tall flare. The underside of the shank flows gradually and consistently into the bowl's fore, offering a soft aesthetic and decreasing the heel's visual weight in favor of the bowl's upward expansion. It all concludes at the top of the bowl, then, which acts as the focal point of this pipe — and my favorite aspect, personally. An uneven crown of natural plateau adorns the rim, and it's further delineated by a crisp ridgeline just below, calling to mind the Rhodesian but with a higher position that matches with the crisp aesthetic of the plateau. Dressed in Eltang's superlative finishing work, this piece wears a deep, ruby-tinged contrast stain, highlighting immaculate flame grain for a gorgeous, eye-catching presentation.-Truett Smith
