Tom Eltang: Smooth Bent Dublin
Product Number: 002-299-1046
While the bent Dublin is a traditional shape, it's broadly defined which permits artisan pipe makers to fashion creative variations, and Tom Eltang's portfolio does well to showcase the diverse freedom of the classic form. This particular rendition exemplifies the Danish carver's mastery of the Dublin shape, presenting a poised, sweeping rendition that's simultaneously familiar yet unique. The tall bowl is rather Pickaxe-like in its execution, gradually flaring from its pointed heel up toward the gently rounded rim. It was a wise design choice as the briar's grain orientation aligns perfectly with the shaping as a stunning array of flame grain rises in concert with the bowl's flare while pin pricks of birdseye populate the surface of the inflated rim. The Danish artisan's signature contrast stain makes the grain even more visually captivating, giving extra definition the gorgeous grain. The bowl's prominence is further emphasized by the negative space created by the low-set transition, while the shank curves upward to meet the softly downturned stem and one of Tom's expertly engineered lip buttons that promises comfort.- Jeffery Sitts
