Tom Eltang: Smooth Rhodesian
Product Number: 002-299-1047
A dramatic Rhodesian from Tom Eltang, this smooth piece contrasts its broad bowl against a proportionately slender shank-and-stem combination. In profile the underside of the shank and heel offer a gentle, sloping arc rising to the crisp ridgeline that defines the rim. That rim is a dome of briar comprising the top third of the pipe and reveals horizontal grain fore and aft. At just over five inches in length, it's a conveniently sized piece, while the bowl presents quite a wide and impressive aspect with plenty of circumference for comfortably accommodating one's grip. The transition is tight, accentuating the bowl while introducing the elevating angle of the shank, which is presented in a soft contour as it rises to the counterbalancing downward turn of the saddle stem. It's a distinctive composition presented in Tom's wonderful contrast staining technique and can ably commend itself even among the most elevated pieces in any collection of Danish artisan pipes.- Chuck Stanion
