Tom Eltang: Smooth Billiard with Bamboo
Product Number: 002-299-1049
While many artisan pipe makers have experimented with bamboo throughout recent years, implementing wildly eccentric knuckles, Tom Eltang maintains a simple, classic style in his bamboo-adorned pieces in an aesthetic à la Sixten Ivarsson — the man who pioneered modern artisan pipe making and changed the approach to bamboo's use in pipes, considering it a compositional design element rather than a mere shank extension. Tom follows a similar stylistic perspective in this Billiard.
Though the section of bamboo is conservative and traditionally utilized, Eltang has used it quite intentionally, having selected a ferrule with evenly spaced knuckles and spacing the base of the stem in such away that it emulates a third knuckle in profile, cohering the entire composition. On the end, then, is poised a classic Danish Billiard bowl — the heel soft and supple with the flanks rounded and tapered toward the gentle rim. The crimson-tinged contrast stain is a signature of Tom's and contrasts vividly against the stark hues of the bamboo, the pale material also serving to make this an impressively lightweight piece.-Truett Smith
