Tom Eltang: Smooth Asymmetric Elephant's Foot with Horn (Snail)
Product Number: 002-299-1059
The Elephant's Foot is a Bo Nordh signature design that has since become a staple among artisan pipe makers, particularly among Danish carvers. Much like the Blowfish, the Elephant's Foot is a shape that relies heavily on specific grain orientation and, when done well, can fully realize a briar block's potential in stunning fashion. Such is often the case when carved by the hands of Tom Eltang, and when the Danish artisan takes to the Elephant's Foot, there's a strong likelihood that it will warrant his superlative Snail grade — as is the case with this gorgeous example.
Most characteristic of the Nordh design is the central panel that wraps the bowl vertically down the flanks, and the grain orientation it dictates. The block is carved in such a way that positions cross grain along this centralized panel, leaving birdseye to dominate the fore and aft sections of the bowl. In this take on the form, though, Tom has slightly softened that defining panel, featuring only a single ridgeline toward the front, while the termination of the cross grain implies the boundary of the "panel." Furthermore, Eltang allowed this particular briar block's grain pattern to dictate the shaping, resulting in an asymmetric form to best follow the cross grain. Such shaping bespeaks Tom's skill as an artist and craftsman, the asymmetry hidden in profile and apparent only from above. Lastly, an extra-creamy mount of horn extends the shank and offers gorgeous contrast against the red hues of the stummel.-Truett Smith
