Tom Eltang: Sandblasted Apple with Bamboo
Product Number: 002-299-1160
Typically when Tom Eltang uses bamboo on his designs, the pale medium is often seen adoring his signature Poker shape; however, the Danish artisan occasionally incorporates bamboo on other pieces as well. This straight Apple from Eltang does well to capture his minimalist Danish style while its overall execution calls to mind the work of the late Peter Heeschen, a respected artisan who often produced bamboo-adorned pieces that were similar in style to this offering. The bowl is squat and affably rounded on this design, tastefully dressed in a light depth sandblast, which has unveiled a wealth of undulating grain across a relatively small surface area. The low profile sandblast maintains the bowl's supple curves while the smooth polished rim provides a hint of textural contrast. The shank-and-stem combination is sleek and streamlined, with three knuckles of pale bamboo interrupting the arrow straight lines for an accenting touch in silhouette. Much like his iconic Poker design, this Apple features an abbreviated saddle stem, with the base of the mouthpiece perfectly continuing the rhythmic spacing of the bamboo knuckles to create a seamless, visually gratifying profile.- Jeffery Sitts
