Tom Eltang: Smooth Dublin with Horn
Product Number: 002-299-1172
One of the hallmarks of a truly great carver is the ability to fashion not only a remarkable rendition of a classic form, but to do so in a manner that imbues said form with a certain stylistic x-factor, all without disrupting the inherent nature of the shape itself. Tom Eltang isn't just any great carver, however. He's Tom Eltang. This is just one of several takes on the Dublin shape that readily peg as Tom's work, and yet each is as inherently his own as the last.
A sprawling, gestural bent Dublin, this piece features a poised, softly-flared bowl positioned at a gentle forward cant, topped with a slightly inflated rim exhibiting a gentle touch of chamfer around the tobacco chamber. A pinched transition guides the eye to the gradually flaring shank, subsequently leading to an elegant accent of horn. And as for the grain, this briar is endowed with birdseye on its flanks, and horizontal grain across the broad rim, all highlighted by one of Tom's vibrant, smoldering contrast stains. A truly remarkable piece from a world-class carver.- Chuck Stanion
