Tom Eltang: Smooth Bent Egg with Boxwood (Snail) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-299-1176
Ever since discontinuing his planetary grading system a number of years ago, Tom Eltang has utilized his prestigious Snail grade stamp to recognize pipes of exceptional quality, often in regards to their shaping or sublime grain orientation. Many pieces that receive the esteemed appellation tend to be non-traditional forms, and when the Snail stamp adorns a more classically inclined shape it's almost always a bent pipe. This bent Egg continues that trend and is a thoroughly Danish interpretation all while remaining easily recognizable as the work of Tom Eltang.
With its supple curves, flowing line work, and minimalist style, this example is thoroughly Danish in execution. The bowl is pleasantly plump and full-bodied, filling the hand with its robust proportions and offering a capacious chamber within. The bowl's curvaceous disposition is maintained by the shaping of the transition, prompting cheeking along the lower flanks while the stem tapers gradually toward the comfortable, meticulously crafted bit. As expected from one of Tom's smooth pieces and especially one that earned his distinguished Snail stamp, the grain on this pipe is stellar and visually captivating. Birdseye dominates the underside before erupting into streaks of flame grain around the bowl, perfectly illuminated through Eltang's signature contrast stain. A pale boxwood mount adorns the shank end, a tasteful and understated touch that serves to elevate this piece to greater heights.
