Tom Eltang: Sandblasted Acorn with Horn
Product Number: 002-299-1182
Tom Eltang has been making pipes in the Danish tradition for over 50 years, having made his first pipe a the age of 11 and apprenticing full time to Anne Julie at 16. His reputation and work are now well known worldwide, and most young pipe makers will mention his name when talking about carvers who influenced their work. He has a prolific work ethic, turning out over 500 high-grade pipes every year, but still can't keep up with the demand for his fine pipes. This flowing Acorn is an excellent example of how he executes Danish design cues, with a softly rounded bowl, lifted, sweeping heel, and very gentle S-curve to shank and stem.
A stimulating midnight sandblast adorns the stummel, displaying ring grain about the bowl, with a chamfered rim left smooth and lighter stained for contrast. The transition is soft, providing an excellent place for thump draping, and the shank end boasts a triple accent with genuine horn. The stem continues the shank's flaring profile, creating an elegant shoulder before slimming to a slightly bent saddle shape, hand cut by Tom to provide an effortless draw and comfortable smoke. Inside and out, Tom's attention to detail on this pipe was excellent and will earn it a place of honor in even the most distinguished collection.- Joel Balyeat
