Tom Eltang: Rusticated Poker

Product Number: 002-299-1196

To say Tom Eltang is well known for his influence on pipe design and production of high-quality smoking instruments would be an understatement. One of the most prolific artisan pipe makers in the world, Eltang began his career in 1974 when he apprenticed to Anne Julie. He learned balance and precision in her workshop and later moved to the W.Ø. Larsen factory, where he practiced efficiency. This Poker is a quintessential example of the kind of work Tom does today, one of his signature shapes and a pure smoking machine.

The bowl is tall and proud but lithe of weight, leaning forward in an eager posture to balance its height against a pencil-thin shank-and-stem combination. Dressed in Tom's signature wave-like rustication, the stummel is stained an inky black, with the inflated rim, canted heel, and shank end left smooth and lighter for contrast. Arrow-straight, the shank stretches at an upward angle to meet a saddle stem Tom has hand-cut from a vulcanite rod. Easily clenchable, this pipe will be equally at home between the teeth, sitting sturdily on your desk, or providing a stimulating presence in hand.
