Tom Eltang: Rusticated Pot with Bamboo
Product Number: 002-299-1225
Tom Eltang made his first pipe at the age of 11 from a Pipe-Dan make-your-own kit. He later apprenticed under Anne Julie for three years when he was 16. She taught him how to balance proportions in his work and how to make all the parts of his compositions work in harmony with each other, bringing his understanding of carving to new heights. After his three years with her, he worked as a pipe repairman for Pipe-Dan, and then traveled for Stanwell, demonstrating the pipe-making craft at tobacco shops. In the decades since, Tom has fashioned high-quality pipes under his own name, developing a reputation for excellence, and his pipes continue to impress with their quality and smoking properties. Among his signatures is a craggy, rusticated finish, exemplified on this Pot.
I wouldn't say that bamboo on an Eltang pipe is necessarily rare, but seeing it on anything that isn't one of his distinctive Poker designs certainly isn't common. This particular rendition is significantly svelte and willowy, and despite how lengthy it is, it weighs less than 20 grams. The stem and bamboo extension are quite lengthy, and the taper of the stem works to bring the flow of the bamboo to a gradual halt as it reaches the bit. Where the two materials transition, a divot in the bamboo meets the vulcanite and is continued by it, reinforcing the naturalistic appeal of the piece, something furthered by the trim shank's rapid flare into the transition, mimicking the rhythm of the bamboo's flow. The bowl is comparatively large and houses a respectable chamber, and its squatness gives the entire piece a low-profile kind of look that I find really sleek. Its entire surface, save for the rim, is covered in Eltang's incredibly textural, ringed and ridged rustication, the peaks stylistically resembling the knuckles of the bamboo, its deep walnut stain contrasting the pale accent handsomely.-John McElheny
