Tom Eltang: Smooth Bent Billiard with Horn (Snail) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-299-1354
Eltang's Snail grade denotes pipes of exceptional quality, both in terms of shaping and grain, and represents some of the best pipes the Danish carver has to offer, which is really saying something. Eltang is without a doubt a master artisan, and his reputation can attest to this fact, so much so that pipe makers from all over the world travel to Eltang's workshop to learn the craft under his supervision. To many, his pipes are the high-water mark from which all other pipes are judged, and it's hard to argue with that estimation when considering a piece like this bent Billiard.
With its supple curves, clean, efficient lines, and soft features, this bent Billiard is a clearly the work of Eltang. It features a tall, upright bowl that tapers ever-so-slightly from its plump, rounded heel to its taut, flat rim. The bowl here is perched at the end of a sinuously bent shnak-and-stem arrangement that curls into a subdued S-curve and adds a good bit of gesture to the pipe's profile. Cheeking along the transition lends the bowl a sense of visual independence within the composition, demarcating the curvaceous shank and stem from the fore. A contrast-stained smooth finish dresses the stummel and highlights a wealth of flame grain and birdseye about the bowl, while a band of horn adorns the shank end and adds a touch of creamy vibrancy to the overall form.--Davin Hylton
