Tom Eltang: Sandblasted Lovat with Brass Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-299-1433

Tom Eltang's storied career is one that spans nearly five decades and began when the artisan was only 16, though his obsession with fine pipes started when he was six. From this young age he would gaze longingly at advertisements of pipes in the windows of tobacco shops, almost prophetic of his future apprenticeship to Anne-Julie. He later joined Pipe-Dan, doing repairs and learning the importance of excellent internal engineering before moving on after another three years, finding himself employed by Stanwell as a traveling carver after working for a short time on a cargo ship. Once he split from the Danish marque, he broke out on his own, leveraging his impressive breadth of experience and signature shaping style to create impressive pieces such as this Lovat.

The bowl of this piece is possessed of a gentle taper from a low-set waistline that terminates in a softly inflated rim, with its walls showcasing a supple bulge to their build that both softens its presence visually and in hand. This bowl rests on a firm, rounded heel which reinforces its rather tall stature, but also cants it forward very subtly, making the stoic shape a touch more dynamic in profile and livening up the composition a bit. The transition here is subtly cheeked, and the lines of the bowl continue through this quite well, accentuating the plumpness of the bowl itself and speaking to Tom's skill and keen sense of line. Ebbing out of this transition is the shank, which is subtly tapered, and this taper continues through the base of the saddle stem. The lengthy shank and slim stem do well to balance the presence of the bowl, and this balanced build is solidified by the broad band of brass that adorns the junction, ensuring that the eye is drawn to nearly every aspect of this pipe's construction. An earthy auburn sandblast dresses the stummel here, revealing rippling ring grain cascading down the walls of the bowl, the smooth rim adding some vibrant contrast in concert with the brass accent: making for a pipe that's both stunning and understated.
